Back in the day before Direct Rail Services (DRS) acquired the contract for the afternoon departmental from Carlisle to Crewe this working was in the hands of English Welsh & Scottish Railways (EWS). This image reminds us of that time when EWS Class 66/0 No. 66087 was captured heading south at Birkett Common with the daily Carlisle Yard to Crewe Basford Hall welded rail consist on 27th September 2012. Amazing how these rails have the ability to bend and follow the curvature of the track as they do when being transported.
