The distinctive single-cab design of the Czech-built BDZ Class 61 electric locomotives were constructed at SKODA Pizen in 1990 although due to some BDZ financial issues the twenty-strong fleet did not find their way on to Bulgarian metals until 1994. Locomotive shortages during 2016-2017 saw a number of the class out on main line passenger workings despite their maximum speed of just 50mph. Here, on 14th April 2017, 61-008 runs into Voluyak, westbound out of the capital Sofia. Vitosha Mountain still with snow on the highest parts dominates the city of Sofia below.
