Class 50 No. 50039 'Implacable' is about to cross the K and A canal on the run into Newbury and is just meeting a westbound HST service on 7th March 1983. The WW2 pillbox by the side of the towpath is a reminder of the time when the canal was set up as a defensive line against an advancing German occupation force, fortunately never put to the test.
