Marking a break with the traditional design of SR third rail electric EMUs, the Class 508 units were used initially on SR routes out of Waterloo before being transferred to Mersey-side as intended. Four car No. 508001 is seen standing at Windsor and Eton Riverside on 23rd August 1983 waiting for the next departure to the capital. The terminus building has the air of one befitting its royal associations.
