A general view of the engineering workshop at Buckfastleigh on 8th April 1985 reveals a surprise in the form of D1000 Class diesel hydraulic No. D1023 'Western Fusilier' receiving attention to one of its V1 2nd Maybach engines - the cylinder heads are on the floor beside it. The loco was was withdrawn to the care of the National Collection after working the 'last day' special and returned to its previous maroon livery seen here. GWR 2-8-0T No. 5239 'Goliath' is having work done on its front wheelset and motion, and a further GWR tank is at an advanced stage of restoration. The wheel lathe is also a prominent feature at this early stage.
