In the early days coal for Fiddlers Ferry power station would have been sourced from the South Yorkshire coalfield, brought over the Pennines and delivered direct via the former LNWR route south of Manchester. By 13th July 1983 with the change to imported coal this section of the original route at Latchford, south of Warrington, sees MGR coal trains from the docks instead, reversing to achieve the original approach to the power station. Class 40 No. 40058 is emerging from one of the sidings with a mixed infrastructure train. The route beyond Latchford eastwards has been abandoned.
