The distinctive styling of the Class 71 series of SR electric locos, illustrated by No. E5001 from the NRM collection, seems to have been designed out by the time the box-like Class 73 version with additional diesel power (and no overhead pantograph) appeared on the scene. Both are available for comparison at the open day at Chart Leacon Depot celebrating 150 years of railways at Ashford on 6th June 1992.
