The route of the Wycombe Railway northwards to Princes Risborough had to contend with the Chiltern escarpment. The original single track was able to be built with minimal engineering whereas when doubled as part of the direct GWR main line to Birmingham it was felt necessary to ease the steep ascent at a max oin 88 southbound out of the Vale of Aylesbury. Two unidentified LMR DMUs demonstrate the original down alignment to the left and the deeply cut up line at a steady 1 in 167 through a tunnel beyond the overbridge, looking north from Saunderton on 2nd August 1977.
