The severe civil engineering demands on building railways in Swithzerland's mountainous terrain means that there are numerous examples of narrower metre gauge lines and rack operation. The line from Lucerne to the winter sports venue of Engleberg has both of these features. LSE No. 3 is just coming off one of the rack sections into Obermatt, returning to Stans and Lucerne. The unit looks brand new but is actually nearly 30 years old on 21st June 1992. It appears that the couplings require considerable latitude for vertical curvature as well as the usual ability to negotiate curvature in the horizontal plane.
