The Network Rail track-recording train running in the path of the yellow HST technical set today is unusually hauled by a pair of DRS Class 37 diesels, with No. 37218 leading and No. 37603 at the rear. After a 19min delay at the start on the return journey from Plymouth to Paddington, it is by now nearly a half hour late crossing Hungerford Common, lit up by a very low winter sun the day before the solstice, on Friday 20th December 2013. On a day of busy pre-Christmas travel the train is sandwiched between a stopping local DMU service and the 'flyer' from Penzance brought to a stop by the slower traffic a couple of minutes later.
