By 1978 the former L&NW route from Oxford to Bletchley was reduced to a freight-only connection between the GW and WCML routes to Birmingham. An hour or so spent at Bicester London Rd on 2nd October 1978 yielded this rake of empty coal wagons hauled by Class 46 No. 46039. The railway scene here has changed vastly in recent years with the resumption of passenger services via the new chord to the Chiltern Line through Bicester. A new station for the Bicester Village retail park, developed to the north of the line here, replaces the old Bicester Town station located behind the home signal.
