The D1000s were the WR answer to replacing the King Class steamers on heavy passenger expresses, but towards the end of their time on BR they proved equally useful on heavy freight workings. Here Western Class No. D1068 'Western Reliance' is trundling along the up relief line near Goring in the Thames valley with loaded 4-wheel fully-fitted mineral wagons on 8th April 1976. The display of headcodes has been discontinued and a number of the class helpfully took the opportunity to show their 4 digit IDs instead.
