With the news that Freightliner is to take over the operations of Mendip Rail Ltd it is perhaps worth reminding ourselves of the time when the MRL livery was proudly carried on the pioneer Class 59/0 locos. These were acquired by Foster Yeoman to provide the heavy haulage capability required for loads out of Merehead Quarry and used by MRL on its formation. No. 59002 is heading eastbound through Langley with a loaded stone train on 31st October 2005. With the locos of the 59/0 (excl. 59003) and 59/1 classes passing over to Freightliner, perhaps they will appear in another shade of green?
