Following the collapse of Communism in Bulgaria little was invested into the railway network whether it be in rolling stock or money for maintaining the system. As a result the latter led to a railway system that declined into a state of poor overall condition. But recently EU subsidies have seen a turnaround with regards to Bulgaria's railway infrastructure with a massive replacement and upgrade being implemented across the country. This section of the Sofia to Plovdiv main line at Kazachene is undergoing complete replacement as is clearly evident in this image taken on 1st September 2022. Bi-directional working is in place as the line nearest the camera is yet to be completed and re-connected. BDZ (Bulgarian State run Railway) Siemens EMU No. 30007/30008 runs eastbound out of Sofia assigned to working service ORD 10113 (11:40) Sofia to Plovdiv.
