Steventon, the village where Brunel set up his working base between London and Bristol during the building of the GWR main line, was strangely left with two level crossings and a footpath crossing when construction was completed. The two LCs still blight theph electrified line, but it was necessary to close the foot crossing, the footpath being diverted to feed in to Causeway Crossing. The narrow stretch of railway land sectioned off for the purpose is clearly visible, protected with fencing built from spent sleepers, as HST set No. 253019 races past with a down express on 26th March 1978.
