We have become used to seeing double trains when Freightliner combine two sets of empties returning to the Somerset quarries, leaving a dead loco in the middle of the consist. However the situation at Taplow on 31st January 1977 is rather different. Class 47/0 No. 47199 has failed on the down main line and Class 47/4 No. 47454 with its train has been brought up behind the errant loco and its seven coaches, and is pushing the combination towards Reading where the failure can be dealt with - without unduly affecting further traffic on the main line.
