As a result of the ECML being closed north of Berwick due to Engineering works, Virgin Trains East Coast services were diverted from Newcastle to Carlisle and thence used the WCML to continue their journey to Scotland. Here, Virgin Trains East Coast Class 43/2 HST No. 43315 arrives at Carlisle, heading the 07:00 London King's Cross to Edinburgh service on 16th September 2017, with its classmate No. 43310 working the rear of the train, while Virgin Trains (West Coast) Class 390/1 Alstom 'Pendolino' No. 390153 'Mission Accomplished' stands at Platform 3, working the 10:00 Glasgow Central to Preston service on 16th September 2017. This service was cancelled between Preston and London Euston due to a person being hit by a train.
