Showing evidence of recent fire damage, North British built 'Warship' Class 42 diesel hydraulic No. 842 'Royal Oak' calls at Exeter St Davids on 17th July 1971 with a Plymouth - London Paddington service. New from Glasgow in December 1960 and initially allocated to Laira, it was withdrawn from Old Oak Common in April 1969 but survived, and was reinstated to Newton Abbot in August of that year. It was finally withdrawn from service in October 1971 and cut-up at Swindon Works during March 1972.
