The 24th June 2024, turned out to be a day of cancellations and delayed trains at Carlisle, brought about by an overhead wire issue at Law Junction, near Motherwell, which affected services to and from Glasgow Central. Considerable confusion occurred around lunchtime with services being held at Carlisle station. In this view, Platform 3 is occupied by a Trans Pennine Express service; the 11.21 Trans Pennine Express service from Manchester Piccadilly to Glasgow Central operated by Class 397, No. 397005. This service should have started at Manchester Airport but was cancelled between Manchester Airport and Manchester Piccadilly, due to the late arrival of the inbound service. It had arrived in Carlisle only 4 minutes late at 13.18 but then was held in platform 3 while it was decided what to do in the circumstances. This picture was taken at about 14.30 but it seemed clear that the best option was to terminate the service and form a service back to Manchester, which is what happened as the unit returned south as: the 16.31 service from Carlisle to Manchester Airport.
