This SAR Class ZASM 0-4-2WT locomotive No. 9, was built by Hawthorns and Co. at the Leith Engine Works in 1859. Hawthorns and Co. later became R and W Hawthorns, Leslie and Co. Ltd.: located in Newcastle upon Tyne. The locomotive carries a works No. 162 and is the oldest steam locomotive in South Africa. It worked on the Cape Town to Wellington Railway, which at that time had a gauge of 4ft 81/2'. It is seen displayed on a short section of track in the concourse of Cape Town station.
