As a result of the ECML being closed north of Berwick due to Engineering works, Virgin Trains East Coast services were diverted from Newcastle to Carlisle and thence used the WCML to continue their journey to Scotland. Here, Virgin Trains East Coast Class 43/2 HST No. 43305 arrives at Carlisle, heading the 07:00 London King's Cross to Edinburgh service on 16th September 2017, with its classmate No. 43319 working the rear of the train, while VTEC Class 43/2 HST No. 43313 stands at Platform 4, tailing the 07:52 Aberdeen to London King's Cross service, with its Classmate No. 43367 working the front of the train
