Virgin Train East Coast Class 43/2 No. 43208 'Lincolnshire Echo' in interim VTEC livery, departs Newcastle and heads towards the Castle Keep, tailing the 12:00 London King's Cross to Inverness service on 9th April 2015. The stone Castle Keep sits upon the site of the original timber castle from which the city takes its name, was built between 1172 and 1177 by Henry II and measures 62 feet by 56 feet by 81 feet tall. Now a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument, it is one of the UK's finest medieval stone castle dungeons still open to the public and is unique in having the main East Coast Main Line running through the centre of its grounds.
