Blaenau Ffestiniog sits without but completely surrounded by the Snowdonia National Park, due to the scars from its industrial past of slate quarrying, and the various waste heaps. Not quite the seven hills of Rome, but 'Stiniog has a certain charm of its own. 37401 and 37417 “Richard Trevithick” leave Blaenau Ffestiniog with Kingfisher Railtours’ return “The Welsh Mountaineer” 1Z74 16.15 Blaenau Ffestiniog to Grantham. Other photographers can be seen perched on the remains of the viaduct that once connected the Oakley Quarry to the Glan y Don slate tip on the other side of the railway line.
