On 14th February 2016 Harz Railway 2-10-2T No. 99 7243-1 takes a well earned rest on Wernigerode Depot after another hard day's work climbing the Brocken Mountain in the former East Germany. 18 of these sixty year old locomotives are owned by the Harz Railway with at least 6 needed every day in the Winter and between 10 and 12 during the Summer period. At this time of the year 4 will operate from Wernigerode, with 1 each at Nordhausen and Gernrode. The Harz Railway operates the same timetables every day of the week, either the Winter or Summer version, so when servicing and heavy maintenance is taken into account, the locomotives are kept busy all year long.
