The 6½ mile Watford Junction to St. Albans branch was opened by the L&NWR in 1858, becoming the first railway to reach St. Albans. In the 1960s the line was a candidate for closure under the Beeching régime, but managed to survive through local opposition. New housing developments have brought increased patronage and the line was electrified in 1988. For the future, there is a proposal to convert the branch to light rail operation. LM No. 321414 stands at St. Albans Abbey terminus ready to depart forming the 1352 to Watford Junction on 20th March 2010.
