The Class 40 Preservation Society Class 40 No. D345 arriving into Appleby from the sidings with The Northern Belle on 29th April 2023. West Coast Railways Class 57/3 No. 57313 'Scarborough Castle' was on the rear. The train arrived as the 0710 Coventry to Appleby where the passengers alighted to explore the lovely market town before the train headed into the sidings as the 1407 Appleby to Appleby North East Siding. An hour later the train returned to the station as the 1458 Appleby North East Sidings to Appleby. After the passengers had re-boarded the train it continued south as the 1516 Appleby to Coventry. A Class 86 operated the first leg of the trip to Carnforth where the Class 40 took over. The 40 would continue as far as Preston before the Class 86 would take over to return the train to Coventry. The Class 57 remained on the rear throughout.
