Originally No. 730 of the Cape Government Railway and then No. 993, when classified as an SAR Class 7A, this 4-8-0 locomotive was built by Sharp Stewart and Co. in Glasgow in 1896. It latterly worked at the Zambezi Sawmills Railway in Zambia and was presented to the artist, David Shepherd, by the then President of Zambia, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda in 1974, in recognition of David Shepherd's gift of a helicopter and efforts to combat wildlife poaching in Zambia. The locomotive returned to the UK in 1975 and is now displayed at Locomotion, the NRM at Shildon, Co. Durham.
