Parked by the quay at Voith Turbo Kiel on 13th June 2013 is 240002. This locomotive was one of three prototypes built in the late 1980s by MaK, and at the time was the largest single engined diesel in Germany. They were intended as universal high powered locomotives, capable of hauling both freight and passenger trains for use on the non-electrified parts of the German rail network. After extensive testing DB sadly placed no orders. However, the three prototypes did go on to see service on the German network. No. 240002, pictured here, suffered a cab fire in 2005 and was rebuilt by Voith Turbo as a dual power source electro-diesel locomotive, and served/serves as a proof of concept for the CREAM-project funded by the European Commission being baptised as Voith Futura.
