At the northern end of the Rhymney Valley in south Wales, rural and urban communities live within close proximity of each other as may be seen in this picture, taken just south of Pontlottyn featuring ATW Class 150 No. 150242 working the 14:25 Rhymney to Penarth on 27th June 2012. The village seen across the valley is Abertisswg and such was the competition at the height of railway boom in the principality, a second route from Cardiff to Rhymney was built with a station located in this village. Pre-Grouping, the line in the foreground was operated by the Rhymney Railway and the one on the other side of the valley was operated by the Brecon & Merthyr Railway; over almost the whole route the two lines were never more than a few hundred yards apart, however, the latter route closed to passengers in 1933.
