The Department for Transport has confiremd that £16 million of Government funding has been dedicated to electrifying the Windermere branch.

The announcement came as Transport Minister, Baroness Kramer, visited Kendal on 28th November. The 10-mile line from Oxenholme to Windermere will be upgraded as part of the work, although no official comment is being made as to whether the service, which is primarily now a shuttle, rather than through trains to Manchester, will remain with the new TransPennine franchise, or be transferred to new Northern operator.

The work could be completed as early as 2017.
