It is reported that the number of passengers using services between Middlesbrough and Whitby has increased by 10% in the last year.

As a result some of the four trains a day are now overcrowded. From 2019, the new Northern timetable is being improved with the return of an all-year Sunday service, an an increase back to eight trains a day in each direction - the same as it was prior to 1991.
