Merseyrail has confirmed that, for the first time in its history, it will operate trains on Boxing Day, allowing easy travel to passengers for the post-Christmas sales.
The decision will make Merseyrail one of the few Christmas operators, with the Network normally all but shutting down from late Christmas Eve until the day after Boxing day.
The operator says a 30-minute service will operate across the network, using six-coach trains, from 09:00 until 18:30, although only select stations will be open. Full details are available on the Merseyrail website.
In previous years, heavy engineering work takes place over the Christmas and New Year period, and only a small number of operators have run services. This year, a combination of Crossrail and Network Rail engineering works means that neither Gatwick Express and Heathrow Express services, both of whom traditionally operate a reduced service on Boxing Day, can run trains.
