Closing with the end of BR Steam in August l968 Carnforth Shed avoided demolition and opened its doors to the public as Steamtown Carnforth. This image taken on 5th September 1983, shows 1937-built LMS Black 5 4-6-0 No. 5407 in a very tidy shed yard, while 1896-built L&Y 3F 0-6-0 No. 1300 passes working the public shuttle service, a far different scene from that of today.
