First member of the AM4 EMU class, later to become Class 304 under TOPS, 304 001 has just departed Tipton Owen Street station and passing Watery Lane Signal Box while working a Wolverhampton to Birmingham New Street local service on 3rd April 1990. The steam age crossing gates were still in situ and the foot crossing was controlled by a wicket gate. The unit was built at Wolverton, originally as a 4-car set in 1957 for the Crewe-Manchester 25KV line. The units were later reduced to 3 cars in 1980.
