During the Summer of 1964 there was a spate of Class 40 failures on the East Coast Main Line, and so Darlington Depot prepared one or two steam locomotives for rescue purposes. On the 8th August 1964 LNER Gresley Class A3 Pacific No. 60045 'Lemberg' was used in this role and stands ready for action facing South at Darlington Station. No. 60045 was to last just another 3 months before withdrawal in November 1964.
