After a spirited climb up Mallerstang, Ex LNER Gresley A4 Pacific No. 60009 Union of South Africa, came to a stand on the climb to Ais Gill summit, on 9th February 2013, while hauling 1Z88, the returning Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express from Carlisle to Farington Junction and London Euston, via the Settle & Carlisle Railway. After an enforced stand of about 5 minutes, just to the right of this photograph, the A4 quickly composed itself and continued the climb to Ais Gill summit, without further drama.
