Demolition work started to demolish the old Wetmore Road bridge at Burton-on-Trent over the Christmas shutdown. This photograph was taken at around midday on 25th December 2012, around six hours after the work had started. It shows that the side walls had already disappeared into rubble after falling onto a temporary structure that had been placed to protect the trackwork from unnecessary damage. The replacement of this bridge, located on the busy Derby to Birmingham route, is required in order to allow larger-size container traffic on this route and is one of a number of bridges on the route that will need replacing under the multi-million pound project.
