The newly commissioned Contaminated Ballast Washer, as seen at the National Track Materials Recycling Centre in Whitemoor Yard on their Open Day on 14th August 2011. With 1.5 million tones of used ballast being brought back to various depots annually, the washer is expected to process 50,000 tonnes of contaminated ballast, and produce 48,000 of clean aggregates, the remaining 2,000 tonnes of pressed dry ‘cake’ being sent to landfill.
