A signal failure in the Salford Crescent area on the afternoon of 29th December 2008 meant that many southbound trains to Manchester were delayed through Preston. The signallers at Preston had their hands full as they used platforms 4 and 5 to hold affected services. Class 156 DMU No. 156424, on the right in platform 4 in this view, was working one such service to Manchester Victoria and was held for almost an hour. Even after the problem was cleared services were delayed as trains and crews were out of position.
