Track removal work has begun on the short 2km spur built alongside Manchester Airport in 1997 to allow rail borne delivery of stone for use in the construction of the second runway. It is disappointing to see the track being lifted as there had been suggestions it could be used for further deliveries of stone when construction of the planned new freight terminal at the airport begins. On 11th May 2008, a road-rail excavator is seen working at the site. The tracks from Manchester Airport station to Heald Green run from left to right in a cutting behind the red and white building.
