In 1985 as the rest of the class were withdrawn, a dozen Class 25s were selected to be retained for use and renumbered as a Class 25/9 sub class. On 2nd January 1987 No. 25901 and 25902 are seen approaching Manchester Victoria with a westbound mixed freight. Both were withdrawn by March 1987. No. 25901 is preserved on the South Devon Railway.
