A rare event took place at Appleby on 15th July 2023 as both platforms were occupied by steam charters. LMS Jubilee Class No. 45699 'Galatea' running as 45627 'Sierra Leone' but still with the number 45562 below the cab window arrives to take on water from the water tower working the return leg of the Railway Touring Company's The Cumbrian Mountain Express railtour as the 1422 Carlisle to Crewe. At the same time, LMS Stanier Class 5 No. 45231 'The Sherwood Forester' with LSL Class 47/4 No. 47828 on the rear takes on water from a tanker while working the outbound leg of Steam Dreams Settle and Carlisle charter as the 0600 Colchester to Carlisle.
