The XPT Class Power Cars, introduced in 1982, were based on the UK HST design and use traction equipment made at Brush, Loughborough, with 2000HP Paxman VP185 engines (from 2000), with speed limited to 100 mph. NSW TrainLink Class XP No.XP2016, originally named City of Cootamundra, one of the last 4 built by ABB Sydney in 1991, waits to depart Melbourne Southern Cross on 12th April 2023 (with Classmate No. XP2006) on the 19:50 service to Sydney. The XPT trains are due to be replaced by bi-mode Civity units in 2024. Note the two rails to allow both Standard and Broad gauge trains into this platform at Melbourne.
