The two track short section between Manchester Piccadilly and Oxford Road stations suffers from constant congestion problems resulting in many late running services and cancellations especially to the Airport further exacerbated since introduction of the new May timetable.
As well as passenger services freight paths have to be added too in order to gain access to Trafford Park. On the 23rd August 2018 DB Class 66/0 No. 66177 hurries an intermodal to Southampton appraoching Piccadilly.
