With the threat of closure in the air the Settle-Carlisle saw an unpresented increase in passenger numbers, so much so that the trains had to be strengthened and double heading of Class 31's became commonplace. On an unrecorded date in January 1984 a pair of unrecorded 31's approach Ribblehead Viaduct with the bulk of Whernside towering over the scene on the morning Leeds-Carlisle.
