Withdrawn in February 1985 Class 40 No. 40118 was reinstated 3 months later, renumbered as Departmental Class 97/4 No. 97408, and used to assist in a remodelling project at Crewe Station. Withdrawn for the second time during February 1986 she passed to Vic Berry's scrapyard in Leicester where she is seen on 5th June 1988. She was purchased for preservation in September 1988 and moved to the Birmingham Railway Museum, Tyseley, where her restoration continues.
