The Hetton Colliery locomotive, seen here in the engine shed at the Beamish Living Museum on 31st August 2014, was built in 1822 by George Stephenson. The colliery's railway was the first to be built with locomotives in mind, and allowed coal to be carried the 8 miles to the River Wear at Sunderland.
