The University State Railroad (a subsidiary of the Norfolk Southern) is primarily used for coal freight to the University of North Carolina. NS EMD Dash 2 No. 5081 stands near the former station at Carrboro on 1st October 2013. The station was built in 1892 to serve the UNC but is now a popular student bar/restaurant, with interesting railway memorabilia.
