A train heads towards the shore from the pier head, as the sun sets over Southend Pier on 27th January. The 3 ft gauge Southend Pier Railway is 1.34 miles long and normally operated by two diesel-hydraulic locomotives named Sir John Betjeman and Sir William Heygate.
