Class 40 engine No. 40057 leaves Haltwhistle on 7th July 1983 with the empty stock of the prematurely terminated 07:05 Edinburgh - Carlisle service via Newcastle. The service could not work any further west due to the derailment of No. 31299 (just visible in the background)on the points by the station yard and the Class 40 engine was sent light engine from Newcastle to return the stock east. The trains original engine, Class 47/4 No. 47527, was detached from the stock before the return to Newcastle and followed light engine shortly afterwards.
